A tough night leaves Sutton with the league to focus on after a semi final defeat last Tuesday

It will be league action all the way now for Sutton Coldfield Town after they suffered an abject 6-2 mauling at the hands of Rushall Olympic in the semi-finals of the Walsall Senior Cup.

Sutton manager Neil Tooth was absent due to personal reasons, leaving Phil Male in caretaker charge. Justin Richards was presumably left on the bench with a trip to Shaw Lane in mind.

In a rampant first half for the visitors, Rushall opened the scoring after fourteen minutes when striker Richard Brodie fired home. Seven minutes later and Brodie doubled The Pics’ advantage by heading in from a free-kick, one which Sutton defended appallingly. The movement of the Sutton players was painfully slow and there seemed little communication.

The third came after Daniel Waldron laid off for Joshua Hawker to sidefoot home.

Waldron bagged the fourth himself with a powerful finish. The Royals were defending in a manner that would be unacceptable at a level much lower than the one the club is playing at. Too often this season we’ve witnessed a series of basic mistakes being made at the back that have contributed to a number of goals.

Further salt was rubbed into the wound when Joe Hull tapped in from a corner Sutton failed to defend, making the score 5-0.

The second half witnessed a response from Sutton that was positive in that the Royals got on the front foot, won second balls, and played with a much better tempo.

In the 53rd minute, Danny O’Callaghan – who has since been to his stag do in Barcelona – pulled one back with an impressive curled effort.

Sutton pushed for more but failed to be incisive in their passing around the box and were guilty of poor control in the box when they did get through.

Rushall added a sixth through Lewis Archer with eleven minutes remaining.

Harvey Howell reduced the arrears to four with his first goal for the club, but Rushall’s clinical first half meant they ran out comfortable winners en route to the final.
