Today we welcome Berkhamsted to the Central Ground. They are based in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, and were formed in 2009 after Berkhamsted Town ceased to exist. The name was taken from a club which had played in the Herts County League in the early 1900’s, and their nickname is The Comrades. Berkhamsted play at Broadwater, on Lower Kings Road; a ground which is positioned between the Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line. The ground has a seated stand on one side of the pitch, with an uncovered terrace next to it. There is also covered terracing behind both goals. The stadium holds 1500 supporters, and the pitch is grass and measures 100 x 64m.
They joined Division Two of the Spartan South Midlands League, winning it in their first season and earning promotion to Division One. The following season they won Division One with 107 points and were promoted to the Premier Division. Their points total was the highest in the National League System and the Herts FA awarded the club the Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy. The 2012–13 season saw Berkhamsted win the St Mary's Cup, and in 2014–15 they won the Premier Division Cup. The club won the Hertfordshire Charity Shield in 2016–17, and in 2017–18 the club were runners-up in the Premier Division, earning them promotion to Division One East of the Southern League.
Sutton have had a short period of rest after what seems to have been a plethora of games in recent weeks. All being well the break has done them good, along with winning their last game at Kidlington which has hopefully given them a renewed vigour as we have slid down the table in recent weeks; much of that due to our success in the FA cup. We can now concentrate on the league and with this being the first of three home games, we can hopefully move back into the top half of the table.
Here’s to an entertaining and successful game.
COME ON YOU ROYALS.
