Today we travel to Kempston Rover. Kempston are a football club based in Kempston Bedfordshire and play at Hillgrounds Leisure, Hillgrounds Road near to parkland beside the River Great Ouse. A new third generation training area has been built with funding of the Football Foundation as well as a new set of changing rooms, board room, and physiotherapy room.
It is thought the Club were founded in 1884, but the first documented evidence of their existence dates back to 1887. This was when the Kempston Rovers Rugby Club played their first football match. At the rugby club's AGM in 1891, it was decided to create a football team called Kempston Montrose. Three years later Kempston Montrose folded and its assets transferred to Kempston Association. An 1895 meeting saw another new team formed, Kempston Rovers. They gained the nickname "The Walnut Boys" due to Kempston being well known for its walnuts.
The ground holds 2000 supporters and they play on a grass pitch of 113 x 77 metres. Kempston play in a home kit of Red & White shirts, Black shorts and Black socks; an away kit of Royal Blue shirts, Royal Blue shorts and Royal Blue socks; and the goalkeeper wears Blue & Yellow shirt, Blue & Yellow shorts and Blue socks.
Kempston have had an up and down sort of season. They started the season well and were in the top 5, then started to drop towards the end of last year, and now seem to be on the way back up with an unbeaten run of three games. They have had impressive wins over Coleshill and Barton Rovers in recent weeks.
Sutton are still on a good run themselves and have a run of 7 games without a loss, so are looking to take this to 8 on Saturday.
Nesbitt and Piggon have been on fire of late, and this has without doubt given the team a confidence boost. Sutton looks like a team who are going to continue to find the net, and having scored 12 goals in the last 3 games, statistics support that. Let’s support the team Saturday and get behind them to push for the playoffs once again.
