Mark Sanders Reports on a difficult away result to Yaxley

It was the 5th league game of the season against a new side for us, Yaxley FC. Sutton’s changes to the team from Monday nights fabulous win over Rushall Olympic were Curtis, Dell and Nesbitt coming in for Haughton, Hearsey and Nadat. I will keep this review short and sweet (be it bitter!) as I fear many will not even bother to read it; it does give you nightmares. I have warned you!

Yaxley were an unknown entity to us, but they introduced themselves quickly as they were straight on the attack. They won a corner within minutes which the Sutton defence cleared off the line but it was as far as the Yaxley number 10, whose shot curled high over the bar.

It already seemed that the writing was on the wall with wave after wave of attack from Yaxley. In a rare Sutton attack, Letford turned his man to draw a foul, the resulting free kick was fired straight into the wall by Nesbitt.

Yaxley gained their first rewards for the continued high pressure with a goal. Butterworth released Sparrow whose low cross met Hook who shinned it into the net.

Sparrow weaved in and out of three of the Sutton defenders and shoots, but the ball was cleared the off the line. Sutton had another attack with a Clarke header from a Curtis cross.

A cross field ball from Yaxley fell straight to Sparrow who cut inside Reuben, and slotted it straight into the bottom corner. Gwilliams had no chance! Sparrow was causing Sutton all sorts of problems. Sparrow scored again minutes later beating his man and slotting the ball past a helpless Gwilliams,

Sutton made changes at half time with Reuben going off and Hearsey coming on. They started the second half brighter by attacking straight away. Dells shot was blocked, Letford went on a run and won a free kick and Curtis floated a ball in, but it fell straight into the keeper’s hands.

Clarke fired a shot which Olly Sutton managed to get a hand to and pushed it onto the post. Barkers came on for Dawes as Sutton tried to get back into the game. Nesbitt had another great chance with a cross come shot which clipped the crossbar.

Omar came on for Letford. He started running at the Yaxley defence and showed promise beating defenders and getting some good crosses in. Sadly, the Sutton firepower was lacking. Sutton had a better second half and just didn’t show up in the first.

While we know we need to replace Nadat and Brown, and felt their absence today, we still have a team of talented players who just need to settle back in to playing without them. Onwards and upwards as they say, so let’s look forward to the future, and put todays performance down to an unfortunate blip.

Come on you Royals!
