This Saturday sees the start of the 2021/22 season, and after a disruptive two seasons we will all be glad to finally see the return of competitive football at Coles Lane.
We welcome Soham Town Rangers to the Central Ground who we last played more than 10 years ago. We won 6-0 on that occasion but obviously that was a while back, and will be no indication of what we can expect on this opening day; although a similar score line would be most welcome indeed.
Soham are based in Cambridgeshire and play at Julius Martin Lane. They were formed in 1947 and play in green and white stripes at home and a full blue strip away. They are nicknamed the Greens or Rangers. Soham have been transferred from the Isthmian League after last season’s cancellation.
There recent honours include Eastern Counties champions in 2007/08 and Cambridgeshire Cup winners in 2005/06.
The previous seasons last two competitive games saw them loose 3-0 to Corby in the FA Trophy, and get knocked out on penalties in the FA Cup by Hashtag United.
Sutton had a slow start to the previous season, but really started to bring it together with that fantastic 5-3 victory over Kidsgrove Athletic, followed up by the 2-0 win over Market Drayton before the opportunity for future success was snatched away.
This season Sutton will be looking to start brighter so as not to be playing catch up mid-season. With a few successful pre-season games under their belt, it’s hoped they will be on a firm footing for when the season starts.
The players are gelling well and are now match fit, the grounds good to go and so are all the backroom staff. All that’s needed now are the fans back in full force, and that’s where you reading this come in.
We hope to see as many of you as possible, so spread the word that on August 14th at 3pm football is back at Coles Lane. Let’s make this season one to remember for the right reasons.
