Mark Sanders Reports as the Royals face a crucial 6 pointer at the bottom end of the table

Today Sutton took on Daventry Town at Coles Lane, which was a game they needed to win to move away from the bottom pack.

Toothy’s team to start this game was Gwilliams, Ashmore, Eden, Christophorou, Beresford, Smith, Isichei, Burgess, Nesbitt, Shaw and Brown.

The Royals had barely started the game when they found themselves behind from a 35- yard shot which was hit by Jack Bowen. He saw that Gwilliams was way off his line and a lofted shot which hit the wind and took it over his head and into the net. 0-1 Daventry.

Sutton were shell shocked and took a while to get into the game. Their first attack saw Brown run across the penalty area and pass the ball round the defender before unleashing a shot towards the goal. It went straight down the middle and was well saved by Martin.

Ashmore had a good run across the field, and set up Nesbitt with an effort which just cleared the crossbar.

Nesbitt had another great effort with a volley from a tight angle, which had Martin diving to his right to push the ball out for a corner.
Nesbitt took the corner and Beresford rose well to get a header which was tipped over the crossbar by Martin. Sadly, for Sutton, the resulting corner came to nothing.

Sutton were close a couple of times in the first half, but finished the half a goal behind.

The second half was met with a double substitution. Brown and Isichei went off and were replaced by King-Harmes and Brogan.

Disaster struck for Sutton on 48 minutes; Gornal-Tyler hit a volley across Gwilliams and inside the far post to double Daventry’s lead. 0-2 Daventry.

Sutton struggled to get any real flow in the second half and never had any real creativity to get back into the game, until they were gifted a penalty in the 81st minute. Nesbitt was brought down in the box, he stepped up to slot to Martin’s right to bring Sutton back in the game. 1-2 Daventry.

No sooner had Sutton reduced the deficit, Daventry increased their lead. Print had only just entered the playing field and scored with his first touch of the ball. He smashed the ball home from close range after being played through into the penalty area. 1-3 Daventry.

Eden hit a long-range effort which had pace and nearly caught Martin out. He had to run back towards goal to get his finger tips on it to stop the ball going into the net. The resulting corner amounted to nothing.

Right before full time Nesbitt latched onto a through ball running between two defenders and managing to get a shot away. Unfortunately, Martin was in the way for Sutton yet again.

The game finished with Sutton losing the game 1-3 and Daventry took the all-important 3 points.

Sutton will be very disappointed not to have taken three points today, but were never really in the game. The team were Toothless on the side-line on the day, and sadly were also toothless on the pitch allowing Daventry too much time to settle on the ball.

Sutton are in action away to Corby Town on Wednesday night.

It will be a difficult game, but one they will need to try to get something from to stop them from falling into the bottom two.
