Mark Sanders reports as the Royals bow out of the FA Cup following a 6 game run

It was Toothy’s 309th game in charge and probably one of the biggest while managing Sutton. The crowd were buoyant and hoping for another cup upset.

Toothy made a forced change with Dwyer coming in for the injured George, and dropped Edwin and Okoro to the bench for the return of Francis and Shaw.

Boston stared on the front foot as expected and their pressing earned them a corner. The in swinger had Gwilliams leaping backwards on the defence, clearing up and push it out for another corner, but thankfully Sutton pushed forward with Francis going close but Crook dived to his feet to block a certain goal.

Sutton then closed down Crooks, attempted clearance through Marselia who then set Shaw up, but his attempted shot was blocked by Shiels.

Walker then broke through the Royals defence and set Thewlis up for a chance, however his shot went wide of the far post.

A high ball into the Boston box had Marselia and Martin challenging for the ball, but Crook rose higher than both of them to claim the ball.

Marselia nearly got on the scoresheet when he was put through on goal, but this time the linesman ruled him offside.

Not many chances in the half for either side but Sutton were equal to everything Boston threw at them and could have even nicked it themselves.

The second half saw Sutton defending a lot but Leek did break through to lay a ball in the box for Marselia, who turned his defender and played in Francis but the defence blocked any shot Francis could make.

54 minutes in and Okoro comes on for Francis.

Knowles hit a low drive which Gwilliams managed to tip wide.

Okoro got straight into the action running into the Boston half beating the right back and centre back before firing a shot which went wide.

Shortly after Boston came close with a free kick but Bez cleared to keep Sutton in the game.

On 67 minutes Shaw was replaced by Edwin.

Okoro took on the Boston defence again with another great run which deserved better than the block and clearance he ended up with.

Sutton were defending well and breaking where possible, but Boston were resilient and kept pushing forward at every opportunity.

Sutton's defence was finally broken on 70 minutes when a corner was headed in at the back post by Shiels.

Sutton won a free kick from a great run by Martin, Leek stepped up but blasted it straight into the wall for the Boston defence to clear.

Christophorou came off for Powney in the 84th minute with Suttons last change for the afternoon.

Disaster in injury time as Bez brought down Tuton in the box gifting a penalty.

Gwilliams kept Sutton in the game with a great save, and a quick release up the pitch saw Marselia with Suttons last chance of the game. A quick turn and volley had the Boston faithful on edge but sadly for Sutton, Crook was equal to it.

Martin saw red right at the death, but passions were high and the he had some rough treatment at times.

Well, it’s the end of the road for Sutton in this years FA Cup. After a great run and a battling performance today, the lads can all be proud of themselves. Yes, the result was wrong but the performance was so right. The gulf between the divisions was not evident in the last few games, and if nothing else, should give everyone confidence for the upcoming league games this season.

Let’s see you all on Saturday for the start of this seasons FA Trophy against Yaxley.

Come on you Royals.
