Mark Sanders gets to know the players in the Ladies Squad

1. This is my third season at Sutton Town. I played for the Under 16’s then as I turned 16, I played in the development team and made a few appearances in the first team. Then I was registered for the first team last season and this season playing Left Midfield as Number 7.

2. The first game I played for Sutton First Tram was on the 14.04.2019 against Goldenhill Wanderers but lost 2-0.

3. My mom, dad and sister come to every game (home and away) and my nan and grandad come to every home game and some away games if they can.

4. I think my most memorable match was the 1-0 win against Stockingford where I put the cross in for Niamh to score the winner on the 90th minute.

5. The game I would most want to forget would be the Wolves game, although we worked well and only lost 2-0 to such a high-quality side, I believe I could of played better and I never felt like I was 100% in the game.

6. During lockdown I took it upon myself to do some extra training, so I was ready to come back better. Statto pointed out that during fitness drills I have improved from before the first lockdown and that it is clear the work I have been putting in to improve. As soon as I knew that under 18’s could have a 1:1, I immediately took the opportunity because I feel like this season, the whole team has become stronger together and I feel as if I am playing at my best now but still earning and can still improve.

7. I train twice a week at football for an hour each and a 45-minute fitness session the Wednesday and at least once or twice a week I like to meet friends to have a small 5-a-side game just to keep my fitness up and learn new things from my friends who also play football.

8. It’s hard to pick a player who is best because everyone works so well in their positions individually, but I feel as if I work extremely well with Niamh upfront. We have both worked together to learn and know exactly where each other would make their run and we are both able to place the ball knowing confidently that it was the correct decision. I’ve set up many goal scoring opportunities for Niamh because of how well we work and how skilful she is, and she always know how to handle a goal scoring opportunity correctly.

9. Leek is the furthest I’ve travelled to play for Sutton, but I enjoy the journey if we are all on the minibus/coach together because it helps the bond in the team.

10. I can’t really point anything out that I think needs improving as such. I think if anything, I wish that being a First Team representing Sutton we should be given more opportunities pitch-wise as I feel like sometimes during training session, we do need more space to work to make it more realistic, one third isn’t always the best. But the staff, food, service and facilities are great.

11. I’ll always support my friends teams if they are local, for example Olivia playing for Walsall Wood, I would always take the chance to go and watch her and support when I can but apart from that I support Manchester United in the Premier League.

12. The best thing at Sutton is that there is no cliches between the team, every player gets on with every other player and all the managers and even parents who come and support. I can say this as everyone at the club gets on with my parents who are always there which I think it shows a special bond between the team. I love that everyone gets on because although football is a serious passion for everyone there, we can all have a laugh and joke around with each other and make it enjoyable as well as professional.

13. I don’t really watch films often; I watch series more than anything. If I had to pick a favourite film, it would probably be Bridge to Terabithia. I’ve always loved the film since I was younger, and the storyline has always stuck in my head. Series wise I love Prison Break and I’ve watched it at least 4 times.

14. I enjoy keeping football as a hobby at the moment because of still being in full time education. I’ve loved football since I can remember, and it runs in my family so I would like to think that in years to come I could build my football experience up to be playing at a higher level. But right now, I am so happy with my position as Sutton because I feel like I am learning more and more all the time from other players, training etc.

15. I have never really had a favourite band but if I was to choose, I would say Oasis. I have been brought up listening to their music with my parents.

16. Everyone just called me ‘Ab’ or ‘Abs’ really, but Andy calls me nugget because of how many chicken nuggets I each from McDonalds.

17. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family mainly. I have a big interest towards the Psychology unit that I am studying right now, ready for University.

18. I’ve kept myself busy by doing out to play a bit of football in the park with a friend and I’ve been having online lessons almost every day with assignments that are due.

19. I do feel like women’s football is better supported but there is still a long way to go. It is definitely coming up and being recognised a lot more but there is still a lot more that people can do.

20. I don’t think its publicised enough but it is definitely publicised a lot more than it has ever been.
