Early FA Cup exit for the Ladies

Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies started their season with an FA Cup tie against probably the toughest opponents the draw could have served up in Bedworth United Ladies.

Knowing from past encounters that this was going to be a big ask, the last thing needed was to concede an early goal, but unfortunately Sutton found themselves 1-0 down inside the first minute.

Despite this early setback, Sutton were very nearly level straight away when a mix-up in the Bedworth penalty area saw the ball drop to Corinna whose shot drifted agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

For a 10-15 minute spell Sutton were well in the game and had decent possession in the Bedworth half without really working their goalkeeper. However Bedworth are clinical in front of goal, and this was proved later in the half with 2 more goals to make it 3-0 at the half-time whistle.

An early goal in the second-half made it 4-0, but that would be the last goal of the match, and to their credit Sutton continued to battle hard for the rest of the game and produced a second-half performance they can be very proud of.

Player of the game was captain Ruth Graham who put in an immense performance throughout the whole game.
Secretary James Green said:

'Firstly congratulations to Bedworth and good luck to them in the next round. To be honest my heart sank when I got the email from The FA with the draw and can't repeat on air the words I used at the time! But personally I think the second-half performance in particular is something the girls can be very proud of. When you consider that 2 players landed from holiday 2 hours before kick-off, and another forced herself to see out the game when the knock she picked up meant she could barely stand up! How can you ask for more than that? Our focus now is fully on Goldenhill next week'
