Royals run riot in local derby

Sutton were able to increase their goal-difference going into the final stages of the title-race with a clinical display at Lichfield

However it took until the 8th minute for the first shot of the game, when Jordan Atkin was unable to connect properly with a Freya Smith cross and as a result the keeper had no trouble in dealing with the effort

Chloe Handy saw an effort drop just the wrong side of the post 3 minutes later

Atkin then saw another 2 efforts dealt with by the goalkeeper within a minute of each other, with the keeper holding on to both at the first attempt

After 15 minutes Sutton broke the deadlock, when Aimee Taylor finished from close-range after great work from Atkin

Following a foul which saw Ally Forbes shown a yellow-card, Lichfield struck a free-kick some considerable distance over the crossbar 20 minutes into the game

Captain Ruth Graham had an effort from a free-kick which never really troubled the goalkeeper midway through the half

Handy had an effort that went wide of the post following a corner after 25 minutes

Taylor scored again in the 33rd minute to double Sutton’s lead, thanks to a clever and unselfish pass from Handy

Chloe Finn had an effort deflected through to the keeper 10 minutes prior to half-time

5 minutes later Lichfield had their best chance of the half, when Lottie McElroy was called upon to push the ball round the post for a corner

A minute later Lichfield were awarded a penalty when a player went down in the area

However the penalty was well-saved by McElroy and the rebound was cleared out for a corner

A free-kick from distance was comfortably held by McElory as the first-half entered stoppage-time

Sarah Lampitt then made it 3-0, following-up a long-range effort from Finn that the goalkeeper was unable to keep hold of

A tremendous solo-effort from Atkin made it 4-0 with the last kick of the half

HT - 4-0

Atkin had a goal disallowed for offside 8 minutes into the second-half

However 2 minutes later she provided the assist for Taylor to make it 5-0 from close-range

A heavy touch prevented Atkin from getting another effort on goal in the 57th minute, as the ball rolled straight through to the keeper

Just before the hour-mark Lichfield had a long-range effort that was comfortably high and wide of McElroy’s goal

A free-kick from Graham was headed in by Forbes with 66 minutes played, taking the score to 6-0

3 minutes later Atkin fired in from outside the area to make it 7-0

Substitute Phoebe Hopwood very nearly made it 8 from close-range, however the Lichfield keeper was able to stretch and push the ball past the far-post

The keeper was called into action again a minute later, saving well from Atkin

Handy struck a post directly from a corner with 15 minutes remaining

Hopwood had another chance to get on the scoresheet 12 minutes from time, however the shot was straight at the keeper

Atkin had another effort from a wide-angle with 10 minutes remaining that the keeper was able to hold onto

Substitute Georgia Murphy had an effort from distance in stoppage-time that proved no trouble for the keeper

FT - 7-0

Player-of-the-Match was Aimee Taylor, who topped a tireless display by scoring a hat-trick against her former club

There were also very welcome returns for Harriet Bridgewater and Georgia Murphy after timeout through pregnancy and injury respectively
