Mark Sanders reports as the Royals knock the holders out to progress to the next round of the Birmingham Senior Cup!

After a glorious run of 5 games unbeaten in the league, it was time to turn the attentions to the cup. This was in the form of the Birmingham Senior Cup against the holders Stourbridge who play at step 3.

Cameron made a few changes for this game and were as follows: Brown, Sawyer, Birch, Lima, Beresford, Doyle, Collins, Burgess, Tague, Hilton and Antonio.

It was a slow start with neither side creating any real opportunity, until Tague picked up a loose ball wide. He fired in a delicious cross to find Hilton unmarked who fired over the crossbar.

On 15 minutes, a long ball forward by Burgess split the Stourbridge defence for Antonio to fire home. 0-1 Sutton.

Sutton were playing well and limiting any Stourbridge opportunities going forward.

A free kick taken by Burgess was headed over the crossbar by Tague. So close to Sutton going 2-0 up.

Stourbridge had their first shot on goal on 29 minutes which flew across goal, but Brown made the save.

On 37 minutes, a forced substitution was made due to an injury to Antonio. McSkeane replaced him.

Both sides showed some good play, but Sutton were the team on top going into half time.

Sutton started the second half on the front foot, with Sawyer delivering a lovely ball to the back post where McSkeane headed down, only for the keeper to save with his feet.

Teague had a lovely chance to make it 2 when a ball headed into his path enabled him to run towards goal. Unfortunately, Price made himself big to keep the ball out with a one handed save.

On 73 minutes Tague was replaced by Byrne

Stourbridge thought they had scored when a Fletcher header was thought to have crossed the line, but the second ball fell to Benbow who made no mistake rifling home in the 78th minute. 1-1.

Sutton’s heads did not drop, and a ball over the top fell to Byrne. He dribbled round the keeper and made a short pass to McSkeane who was duly upended in the box.

The penalty was taken and scored by Hilton, who fired bottom right to put Sutton back in front, 1-2 Sutton.

Brown got down well to save Sutton from relinquishing the lead.

Sutton were lifted and were soon on the attack again, with Collins setting Bryne up with an effort which was well saved by the keeper.

On 88 minutes and from central midfield, Sawyer hit a curling shot from distance into the bottom left side of the net to put the game to bed. 1-3 Sutton.

Hurley came on in injury time for Collins, but the game was won. Sutton saw the game out for an amazing victory from a well-organized Stourbridge side.

6 games unbeaten now, and the team look full of confidence. They are proving they are a good quality team, something we all knew, but felt they just needed the right direction.
