Mark Sanders reports as the Royals are undone by a single penalty at home

After a run of 4 losses on the bounce and no points in the league so far, Sutton took on Shepshed Dynamo at Coles Lane in the hope of breaking their Duck.

Stringer’s team from today was as follows: Brown, Birch, Fitzgerald, Hurley, Christophorou, Clements, Collins, Burgess, McSkeane, Hilton and Edmunds.

The changes from Tuesday nights defeat to Hinckley were Remi Birch in for the injured Pedro Lima and Clements coming in for Dampha to provide more experience in midfield.

Sutton started brightly, and Hilton delivered a lovely through ball for Burgess to latch on to, but before he could get the shot away, the Shepshed defender slid in to prevent the effort.

McSkeane managed to get the ball in a good position, and with his back to goal managed to swivel and fire toward goal. But the defender did enough for his effort to go wide of the post.

Shepshed had 3 good chances in quick succession, with Ruzvidzo and Shaw firing just wide, and Cummings whose effort smashed off the crossbar.

Clements ran across the Shepshed goal and fired an effort back towards the far post, but his effort went wide.

Sutton were pushing for the goal, and Collins delivered a delightful ball into the box which was chested down by Clements. That pass set Edmunds up with a fierce shot which flew over the crossbar.

Hilton who was causing problems for the Shepshed defence! He ran to the bi-line before delivering a square pass to McSkeane who fired just wide of the near post.

McSkeane was involved again moments later, and after some good footwork he enabled Burgess to get a shot off which went wide.

Just before half time Edmunds came closest to scoring for Sutton. He beat the defender, ran into the box, but his ultimate shot was smothered by goalkeeper Ganley, who got down well to prevent a certain goal. 0-0 HT.

It was a slow start in the second half with both teams struggling to make any headway.

Suttons first real chance came in the 65th minute, when a great run by and delivery by Hilton to Edmunds gave him a chance to score, but his powerful shot went wide.

70 minutes in and disaster for Sutton with a soft penalty award for a foul on Morris by Christophorou.

Dixon scored with a shot to the left of Brown. 0-1 Shepshed.

Sutton nearly got level when a loose ball in the box was met by Fitzgerald whose shot went agonizingly close to the post.

Sutton lost yet another game but with a much-improved performance and opportunities created, it was just finishing that was the problem on the day.

Next up is Coleshill away on Bank holiday Monday with a chance to quickly put the last few games results behind them.

Let’s get behind the lads to push them to victory, they need your support more than ever.
