Mark Sanders reports as the Royals turn the form guide upside down to record their first win of the season!

The Royals made the short trip to local rivals Coleshill on the back of 5 defeats with an almighty task ahead of them, as Coleshill were in 3rd place and in good form.

Stringer’s team for this Bank holiday fixture was as follows: Brown, Hurley, Lima, Christophorou, Fitzgerald, Collins, Edmunds, Clements, Hilton, Burgess and McSkeane.

It was a slow first 5 minutes with both teams testing each other out, but Sutton soon started to attack with the first effort by Edmunds. He cut inside the defender before firing just wide of the post.

Edmunds again made great progress down the wing, before delivering a superb ball into the box which Collins met, but a sliding tackle stopped the ultimate shot.

Hilton looked back to his best as he weaved past 2 defenders before unleashing a strike, which was well saved by the Coleshill keeper.

On 24 minutes Fitzgerald received the ball wide, he played a lovely one two with Collins which allowed him to run into the box. He weaved past two defenders before firing the ball to the right of the keeper to send the fans wild and put Sutton in the driving seat. 0-1 Sutton.

On 37 minutes McSkeane delivered a great ball to the back post where Fitzgerald was waiting to volley towards goal, but the defender blocked the effort.

Burgess found himself through on goal minutes later when he ran through the centre of midfield. With just the keeper to beat, a tackle from behind stopped the shot.

Just before half time Hilton ran to the bi-line before cutting a ball back for Edmunds to fire towards goal. But it was straight down the keeper’s throat and the half finished with Sutton in the ascendency.

The second half started with Coleshill on the front foot as they looked to try and get a foot hold on the game. Brown made a great save to keep Sutton in front.

Edmunds finally gave Sutton some respite when a good run and cross found Clements waiting in the box, but his shot hit the back of McSkeane, which was unfortunate for Sutton.
On 75 minutes Collins made a good run, but pressure from the defender did enough to make his final shot go just wide.

McSkeane tracked a ball which was sent high up the pitch. He gambled on the drop and clipped it at a tight angle over the keeper. It rebounded from the corner and into the net to put Sutton in a comfortable lead. 0-2 Sutton.

Moments later McSkeane nearly got his second after firing across goal just wide of the post.

On 82 minutes Birch came on for Edmunds.
Coleshill went on the attack and a ball into the box which past Brown was headed away of the line by Pedro Lima.

On 90 minutes Collins was replaced by Dampha.

In injury time Bryne came on for Hilton, and there was just enough time for one more attack as Remi set up Bryne with an opportunity. Unfortunately, his effort went just wide.

The game was well and truly won by Sutton! 2-0 and what a performance it was! A a clean sheet and 2 outstanding goals, which gave Sutton a well-deserved 3 points.

How good did that feel lads?

Now it’s back to Coles Lane on Saturday, in the hope that this win will springboard the team to further greatness and go on a much more positive run.

Hope to see you all Saturday, as it’s a big game against Coventry Sporting.
