Mark Sanders reports as the Royals come from behind for an emphatic win at home!

Sutton stopped the rot on Bank holiday Monday with a fantastic win away to Coleshill Town. It was now back to Coles Lane to go for our first league win of the season, at home, against Coventry Sphinx.

Stringer’s team for this game was: Brown, Hurley, Fitzgerald, Lima, Christophorou, Clements, Collins, Burgess, McSkeane, Hilton and Edmunds.

Sutton were slow getting into the game, but Hurley delivered a lovely ball into the box which Fitzgerald duly dispatched. Unfortunately, it went high over the crossbar.

Edmunds set up Collins with an effort, but his shot was blocked, and it fell to McSkeane who’s effort went over the crossbar.

Against the run of play, Sphinx took the lead with a shot across the goal into the bottom right by Shipman. 0-1 Sphinx.

Sutton won a free kick, which Burgess stepped up and delivered into the box. Edmunds shinned an effort which went just over the bar.

Hilton went on a great run and set Edmunds up for a shot, but it was a tame effort by his standards, and was saved by Fallows.

Just on half time and from distance, Fitzgerald fired a shot, which with the help of a slight deflection dipped under the keeper to put the scores level. 1-1.

Sutton took a while to go on the attack in the second half after some early pressure by Sphinx.

Hilton went on a run and fired a shot low, which Fallows was equal to. This gave encouragement to Sutton, and they were soon on the attack again. Brown delivered a great ball down field with pin point accuracy to Edmunds who controlled the ball well, beat the defender and fired across goal only for it to go just past the far post.

Hilton continued to cause problems on the wing, and a run to the bi-line pulled the ball back losing the defender. This allowed the shot, which unfortunately hit the foot of the post.

On 68 minutes Ceesay came on for Clements, and on 71 minutes Sawyer was on for Hurley.

On 73 minutes, McSkeane put the Royals in the lead with a strike from centre of the goal. The shot went to the keepers right, which left him no chance. 2-1 Sutton.

On 77 minutes Dampha set Edmunds up with a ball right to his feet. It allowed him to slot home with ease to the keepers right, and virtually put the game to bed. 3-1 Sutton.

Edmunds was taken off to be replaced by Byrne on 90 minutes.

Byrne nearly made it 4 as he trapped the ball central to the goal, and a quick pivot and shot saw it fall just wide of the post.

In injury time, a ball picked up by Hilton ran into the box and with just the keeper to beat, he curled the ball round the keeper to make it 4 for Sutton, and cap off a wonderful afternoon. 4-1 Sutton.

Sutton, now with back-to-back wins, are back on track with goals to match the performances. With Boldmere to come in the FA Trophy next weekend, could we start to dream of a cup run.

Hope to see as many of you as possible to cheer the lads on.
