Mark Sanders reports as Cam Stuart secures the first win of his tenure against high flying opposition!

After a better performance last week against Loughborough but without the result to match, it was time to correlate both with a trip to local team Bedworth. A team who was currently flying high at the top of the Northern Premier.

Stuart’s team for today was as follows Brown, Sawyer, Christophorou, Lima, Beresford, Collins, McSkeane, Burgess, Brown, Hilton and Clements.

It was a very slow start to the game with very little to report in the early exchanges. It mostly comprised of a midfield battle, with little going forward for both sides.

Hilton got things moving for Sutton, as his familiar run down the wing caught out the Bedworth defence. As he cut inside the defender and fired towards goal, his shot got stuck between the legs of Lomax It was a difficult clearance in the end, and from the resulting corner, Beresford volleyed an effort just over the crossbar.

Burgess received a good ball from McSkeane central to the goal, and fired an effort which Lomax did well to smother low to his right.

Just before half time McSkeane trapped the ball well, turned and fired a curling effort which unfortunately for Sutton was straight down Lomas’s throat.

It was honours even at half time, with Sutton the brighter of the two teams, and were the more disappointed to be going in at half time with nothing on the score sheet.

Leo Brown was taken off as a precautionary measure due to foot injury at half time, with Ryan Edmunds coming on to replace him.

Hilton got things moving forward for Sutton, he cut in from wide before firing from a tight angle. Unfortunately, it hit the side netting.

Hilton, minutes later, was put through one on one with the keeper but Lomax narrowed the angle and stopped the shot with his legs.

On the hour mark, a corner for Sutton taken by Edmunds was met by a diving Beresford. He found Skeano from 3 yards out, he swivelled on the spot and fired into the back of the net. Sutton 0-1.

The goal sparked the Greenbacks into life, and a goal mouth scramble in the Sutton penalty area had hearts racing, before Magunda blazed over from 6 yards out.

Blythe nearly got Bedworth back in the game when his goal bound header was tipped over the crossbar by an athletic Brown.

Edmunds broke free from some Bedworth pressure before setting a ball across field to McSkeane, who’s effort curled just over the crossbar.
On 87 minutes McSkeane was replaced by Antonio.

Clements hit a volley from distance which went wide due to a deflection. New boy Antonio found space to fire a good effort low, but Lomax got down well and smothered the effort.

The game finished 0-1 to Sutton, with a well-deserved victory for the lads and Cameron Stuart.

At times the game was not pretty, but the lads ground out a much-needed win against a difficult Bedworth side. Now the team can hopefully take this forward to the home game next week against Cambridge City.
