Mark Sanders reports as the Royal earn back to back clean sheets as form continues to improve

After a wonderful first win under the Cameron Stuartt reign last Saturday against high flying Bedworth Utd, it was now time to get results flowing at home against mid table Cambridge City.

Stuart made three changes to his team selection from last time out with the starting team 11 as Follows: Brown, Christophorou, Taylor-Carter Bryne, Lima, Beresford, Collins, Edmunds, Burgess, McSkeane, Hilton and Kyle Byrne.

Although there was some good possession early on, it was on the quarter of an hour mark before Sutton made any real attack. Hilton weaved his magic, before pulling the ball back into the box to find McSkeane unmarked. His effort was unfortunately blocked well by the Cambridge defence.

The two Byrne’s combined well on 25 minutes, with Taylor-Carter finding the head of Kyle, but unfortunately his header went just over the crossbar.

The half finished with no more efforts of note, with both sides pretty much even in forward play.

Hilton took Sutton forward in the second half with some skilful work wide of the pitch. He crossed to McSkeane, who was running into the penalty area. As he struck the ball, the Cambridge keeper was swiftly down at his feet to keep the ball out.

On 60 minutes Leo came on for Kyle Byrne.

Some great play by McSkeane down the wing saw him deliver a ball for Lima at the near post. He headed to the back post where it met Hilton who came so close, but fired just over the crossbar.

Hilton tried his luck from range, but his curling effort went just wide of the right-hand post.

Hilton, on the ball again, passed a delicious ball to the back post. It was met by Brown, but his downward header went straight to the keeper.

Leo Brown was full of running, and caused the Cambridge defence some concern as he out-muscled the defender, and whipped a great ball across goal. It just evaded Burgess who dived, but ended up in the net himself!

On 82 minutes Doyle came on for Edmunds.

Sutton nearly bagged a late goal. A Collins corner found Beresford, who headed the ball which the keeper claimed but not cleanly. Because of this, Beresford fired into the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for an adjudged foul on the keeper.

The game ended all square and a second clean sheet for us in a row. It shows the defence is tightening, but going forward is still a problem for The Royals.

Next up is Rushden and Diamonds at Coles Lane on Saturday.
