Mark Sanders reports as the Royals unbeaten run continues with a point on the road!

Sutton were on a great run going into this game. With 6 games unbeaten, and on the back of a very memorable win away to Stourbridge in midweek, the lads were feeling very confident against a very difficult side in Corby Town.

Stuart’s men for the game were as follows Brown, Christophorou, Carter-Byrne, Lima, Beresford, Doyle, Collins, Burgess, Tague, Hilton and Edmunds.

It was a slow start to the game with neither side making any clear-cut chances. Much of the pressure was on Sutton as Corby looked to take charge of the game. Hilton broke free from a Corby attack and set Burgess up. He curled a lovely ball to the back post where a Collins header went just wide.

After some great work by Hilton who passed two defenders and delivered the cut back, Doyle had a shot from 20 yards out.
Sutton, who had absorbed a lot of pressure, broke free after a lofted ball over the defence found Edmunds free. He ran towards goal after losing the defender, curled his shot round the keeper only to see it rebound off the post. Luckily for Sutton, Tague was on hand to dispatch into the net to put Sutton into the lead. 0-1 Sutton.

A free kick for Corby in their own half split the Sutton defence, it found the head of Keeble, who headed back across goal to put Corby level right on half time. 1-1.

Hilton picked up the ball wide and took advantage of a defender slip. He drove into the box, side-stepping two defenders, before smashing the ball into the top left corner of the net. 1-2 Sutton.

Burgess picked the ball up wide and decided to have a shot. It was heading to the left side of the goal, but was prevented by a fantastic diving save by Ben.

Corby were pressing well, and Jono pulled of a great save to keep Sutton in the lead.

Tague was replaced on 70 minutes with McSkeane replacing him.

McSkeane was full of running and caused the Corby defence problems with his pace. He beat the defender, and just missed out on sealing the game when his shot took a slight deflection off the last defender to send the ball wide. It was so slight that the referee missed it a gave a goal kick.

Jono was strong in goal making several claims and another couple of good saves to keep Corby out.

A free kick was awarded to Corby on the edge of the box, which was a relief as the fans thought the ref had given a penalty. The shot was smashed into the wall, and after Corby players surround the ref, he gave a penalty for handball! The defender was adjudged to have handled in the box, even though there was little they could do about it.

A second yellow for Collins meant he saw red and left the pitch. It was not a fitting end to a great all-round game by Collins.

Gordon was very much alive for Corby as he slotted home. Jono went the right, but it was only the power that beat him. 2-2.

The game finished all square, but although most would have taken a draw at the start of the game, it felt very much like a loss with victory being snatched in the last minute.

The lads really stepped up their game, with all playing really well individually and collectively.
