Marks Sanders reports as the Royals return to winning ways!

After a run of games without a win, it was a chance for Sutton to get back to winning ways against a side that started the ten game unbeaten run earlier in the season.

Bedworth United, who were just 2 points behind Sutton, were looking to avenge their home defeat from earlier this season, and to leapfrog over Sutton in the table.

Stuart’s starting eleven included new signing Oscar Tongue, Landers, Christophorou, Tongue, Lima, Beresford, Doyle, McSkeane, Burgess, Tague, Dowd, and Byrne.

Sutton started the game brightly, and Byrne nearly got Sutton off to a great start with a fantastic run down the wing. He was twisting and turning the defence inside out, before he unleashed a powerful shot which cannoned off the crossbar.

Tongue tried a shot from distance but pulled it well wide; however, he showed good intent.

Tongue was soon in the action again as he ran wide before delivering a stunning ball into the box. The curl on it surprised everyone, and McSkeane nearly got a head to it; but the ball was headed into the back of his own net by Bedworth’s Luke Rowe. 1-0 Sutton.

Landers made a fantastic double save with his legs to keep Sutton in the game.

Tague hit a shot from distance, but a deflection off the defender took the sting out the shot and made an easy save for O’Brien.

Charlie Dowd tried his luck, but O’Brien was down well and palmed his effort wide of the near post.

Flounders was again called into action just before half time, as he dived to his left to stop a certain goal.

A corner right at the death of half time saw Beresford get a header at the far post. Sadly for Sutton, it was straight down the keeper’s throat and an easy claim for O’Brien.

It was a pretty even first half, with Sutton unable to take advantage of some good chances.

Sutton started the second half more slowly, and it wasn’t until the 54th minute that Sutton had their first chance. Burgess ran wide and delivered a ball into the box, it got stuck under his feet with his back to goa. Aware of the keeper approaching behind him, he hit a cheeky back heel but the keeper just got down to divert the ball wide.

McSkeane took the ball wide and hit a fierce shot across the goal which the keeper did well to parry away.

On 70 minutes Dowd is replaced by Collins.

McSkeane nearly scored moments later when his effort could only be parried out to Charlie Dowd. His effort was only kept out of the net by the legs of O’Brien.

75 minutes in and Tague was replace by Collins.

Sutton managed to hang on to the win, but it was a solid defence that kept The Royals on route to all three points. New Signing Oscar Tongue settled in well and produced a good performance and assisted with the winner.

All in all, it was a fantastic and much needed three points which will hopefully be the catalyst to move on to better things in the coming weeks.
