After last weekends great victory over Wisbech Town, Sutton took on fellow strugglers Daventry Town in a bottom of the table clash where the victors could finally distance themselves from the bottom three.
Thorpe’s starting 11 for the match were Brown, Hurley, Lloyd, Christophorou, Beresford, Redfern, Crook, Burgess, Corvin, Sang and Marselia.
Sutton had barely got into the game before they fell behind after Bowen headed a cross field ball down to Tom Lorraine. He was free to pick his shot to fire Daventry into the lead. 1-0 Daventry.
Sutton nearly equalised after some great play by Marselia put Corvin clear, but his shot across goal went just wide of the far post.
Corvin struck a sweet effort which ended up in the back of the net, but sadly for Sutton it was ruled out for offside.
22 minutes in, and Sutton had an uphill struggle on their hands when George Ball headed past Brown in the Sutton goal. 2-0 Daventry.
Marselia saw his effort fly over the crossbar, which did not cause any problems to the Daventry keeper.
Sang was put through on attack, but his shot was well saved by Martin who got a good hand to it.
Marselia nearly reduced the deficit as he was put through on goal, and with only the keeper to beat, Martin came out to smoother the shot and stop Suttons best chance of a goal in the first half.
Marselia delivered a lovely cross for Sang to fire a shot in but it was straight down the keeper’s throat and easily saved.
54 minutes in and Crook came off to be replaced by Eden.
Sutton had a great opportunity on 55 minutes, when a free kick was won just outside the Daventry penalty area. Burgess hit a sweet strike, curling his effort round the wall but Martin managed to punch the ball clear.
Eden looked lively when coming on, and delivered a sweet ball for Sang to head just wide of the post.
Second substitution came on 64 minutes with Corvin coming off for Brown.
Eden provided Marselia with a ball into the box, but his header went straight over the bar.
Sutton’s chances were limited in the second half, and despite making another change before full time with Billingham- Belle coming on for Jack Sang, the match was effectively won by Daventry in the first half. The game finished 2-0 to Daventry with Sutton now looking back over their shoulder especially with Histon getting a credible win over Carlton.
The performance was well below par, with a lack of energy and no real direction going forward.
Sutton have Belper on Tuesday night, and a similar performance to this would spell disaster for Sutton.
It’s a case of regroup and refocus, as the team have a tough couple of games ahead. We have some talented lads and things will get better, I’m sure.
