Mark Sanders gets to know the Directors at SCTFC

During the summer each week we will be giving an insight into the Directors at SCTFC who help keep the club running. Mark Sanders kindly prepared a questionnaire for them all to fill out and send back to be shared with all.

This week we start with the Chairman - Nick Thurston.

1 How long have you been associated with Sutton Coldfield Town?

Since I first sponsored the shirts with my company LG Ball Valves in 2007.

2 How did you become involved with Sutton?

See question 1. After I had been sponsoring the shirts for 2 years I was invited to join the Board. By the way it was Ken Hawkings who I knew through Rotary who first got me involved so I suppose it's all his fault!

3 Can you remember your first game? If so, which one was it?

I think it was an FA Cup replay against Lowestoft. We had earned a good 0-0 draw away in front of a crowd of over 1000 but despite taking the lead we lost the match at Coles Lane 2-1.

4 What is your role at the club?

Chairman and general dogsbody.

5 What are your typical match day duties?

Meeting and greeting the visiting team officials and organising the ball boys when we have them.

6 Do you support any other league clubs?

I come from Southampton so I'm a diehard Saints fan

7 What is the best game you have seen at Sutton, or your best moment?

Best moment at Coles Lane was 3 seasons ago when we beat 2nd place Spennymoor 1-0 with Max Wright running the whole length of the pitch beating several players to slot home. Probably the best ever was the recent performance v Bromsgrove in losing 3-2 in a fantastic game we should have won.

8 What is your favourite film?

Any of the Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers.

9 What are your hobbies other than football?

Cooking, walking, Rotary and gardening.

10 What are your hopes for the coming season?

Play some good attractive football, be around the top end of the League and get to the 1st round proper of the FA Cup and get drawn at home to Walsall. No pressure Toothy!

11 What improvements would you like to see at the ground?

We've done a hell of a lot in the last 10 years and still a lot to do. Floodlights next. Maybe a new upper storey on the Clubhouse after that?

12 Who has been the best player you have seen over the years?

James Wren in goal. It had to be a good shot or header to get past him.

13 Where is the furthest you have travelled to see Sutton?

Probably Workington or Blyth Spartans

14 What made you choose to volunteer with Sutton Coldfield?

I'm not sure I had any choice- it just happened!

15 What are your aspirations for the upcoming season?

Well mostly what I said in question 10 but I hope we continue to grow in the youth section and ladies section too. That's the real future of the club and the youth players will eventually feed the 1st team as we have already seen last season.

16 What are your thoughts on last season?

A really good season. Some good football, a playoff place, a cup final and beating Rushall in the FA Cup away.

17 How do you relax after the stresses of cheering Sutton?

A nice pint of Real Ale in the clubhouse.

18 Does your family share your interest in Sutton?

My wife's interest or lack of interest in football is well known but my grandkids Ted and Violet love it.

19 What are your hopes on the field for the coming season?

I think I've detailed those above. Let's see some attractive football.

20 How many grounds have you visited with Sutton, and are there any new grounds you will be going to this season? I've no idea how many. I know it won't be nearly as many as Bill Portman and Richard Aitken. Next season looks like we are in the NPL again so probably only a few new ones.
